Pantone's color for 2017? It's called Greenery, a bright spring-green that may be a little too bright to have as more than an accent here and there. You'll start to see it in stores soon, if you haven't already.

What does it mean when a new Color of the Year is announced? It doesn't mean you have to change your house, but it does mean if you're hunting for accessories, you're going to see more of that color, as well as colors that complement it.

The paint companies also select a Color of the Year. Benjamin Moore has chosen "Shadow", a dark gray with deep violet tones, nothing like the Greenery. Cloudberry by Olympic and PPG Paint's Violet Verbena are also blends of grays and aubergine. Dunn Edwards went a different direction and selected Honey Glow, which is a warm, welcoming golden yellow.

If you're not confident in your color choices, consult online sites like Houzz or any of the paint brand websites. Go to your local home improvement store, to the paint section and play with the chips to see what combos work for you. A stroll through the SoCo Collection in Costa Mesa can give you even more ideas as you look at what designers are putting together.

Think about introducing a color to your home through a pillow, a vase, a painting that includes the colors. You don't need to go overboard (think Marie Schrader in "Breaking Bad" and her penchant for purple, including a purple toaster), but if you do decide to paint that whole room Greenery, remember that it's only paint.
